The airline was founded in July 1979 as Air Lanka, which was set up by the Government of Sri Lanka. Once established, the airline started operating two Boeing 707s that was taken on lease from Singapore Airlines. The airline started increasing its operating destinations during the 1980s and by 1990s the airline extended its operations connecting 26 destinations and added many more aircraft to increase the fleet size. It purchased its first Airbus A320 in the year 1992.
